The Brief
Sons of Legion wanted something for their inner circle. Not a polished music video, but a raw, behind-the-scenes look at their recording process for a new EP. The location was key: they were tracking at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. The goal was to create a 10-minute documentary and a batch of social photos that felt personal and unscripted, giving their biggest fans a seat in the control room. They gave us a simple directive: capture everything, but don't get in the way of the music.
The Plan
This wasn't a job for a big crew and a mountain of gear. We went in with a two-person team, sticking to small, nimble camera setups. Our approach was purely observational. We let the band work, focusing on the candid moments: the late-night debates over a lyric, the frustration of a missed take, and the quiet satisfaction of a perfect harmony. While one of us focused on motion, the other pulled stills—capturing the texture of the studio and the concentration on their faces. No planned interviews, no posing. Just the work.
The Room Where It Happens
You can't film in FAME Studios and ignore the history. The place is a living document. Every scuff on the floor and every vintage microphone has a story. This is where Aretha Franklin, Wilson Pickett, and Etta James recorded iconic tracks. That history became a silent character in the film. We made sure to capture the details—the Wurlitzer electric piano, the famous echo chamber, the photos on the walls. It wasn't just a recording studio; it was the entire reason the band was there. They wanted to soak up that legacy, and our job was to show that.
The Final Cut
The band received a 10-minute documentary that feels less like a promotion and more like a private journal entry. It’s a quiet, intimate film that shows the tedious, rewarding reality of making music. Alongside the film, we delivered a gallery of over 100 edited photographs for their social channels and press kits. The project succeeded because it was honest. It didn't try to sell anything. It just shared a specific, meaningful experience with the people who care about the band the most.
